Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (translated as Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror; or simply Nosferatu) is a 1922 German Expressionist horror film, directed by F. W. Murnau, starring Max Schreck as the vampire Count Orlok. The film was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897). Although Nosferatu was not a commercial success due to copyright issues with Stoker's novel, the film is considered a masterpiece of Expressionist film.
Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau (1888 – 1931) was a German film director, greatly influenced by Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Shakespeare and Ibsen plays he had seen at the age of 12. During World War I he served as a company commander at the eastern front and was in the German air force. He created the 1922 vampire thriller Nosferatu, as well as such compelling examination of love as 1927's Sunrise and 1931's Tabu. Murnau's promising career was cut short by a car accident in 1931.
