The life, art and inner world of Russian master Andrei Tarkovsky are explored through the words and images of the director himself in this simple and reverent tribute by the director's son, Andrei A. Andrei Tarkovsky. A Cinema Prayer consists of a rare archival treasure where we see for the first time audio recordings, photographs, film clips and behind-the-scenes footage of masterpieces such as The Mirror (1974), Ivan's Childhood (1962), Andrey Rublev (1966), Solaris (1972), Stalker (1979) and Nostalghia (1983), revealing how these films were developed and realized. Most of the materials come from the archives of Tarkovsky's former apartment, now part of the Andrey Tarkovsky International Institute which is managed by Andrey A. Tarkovsky.
The documentary takes us on a spiritual journey where Andrey Tarkovsky talks about his early memories, his thoughts on cinema, discusses the importance of religion and spirituality, as well as artists who inspired him like Shakespeare, Bach and Tolstoy. Through rare recordings we are close to the director's deeply personal thoughts on topics like existence, death, religion and art.
