Screening of Taipei Story

The Taiwan Film Weekend will come to a close on Sunday, September 20, at 20:00, with Edward Yang’s second film, A Taipei Story.

A Taipei Story (1985) is a portrait of a rapidly changing Taipei, seen through the breakdown of a romantic relationship. Lung, a former baseball player who has returned from the United States and works in his family’s traditional textile business, remains deeply attached to the past. His partner, Chin, works in real estate and sees the city’s modernization as an opportunity for a new life.

As their relationship begins to fall apart, Yang uses this personal distance to explore a society moving from traditional values toward a more globalized future, where ambition, migration, and economic success are reshaping the way people see themselves and one another.

Yang films Taipei as almost a character in its own right: a city moving toward the future, while the people living in it are not always ready to leave the past behind. A Taipei Story is therefore a love story, but also a film about a society trying to understand what it is losing in the process of modernization.
