Lucien de Rubempré is a young idealistic poet born without fortune in Angoulême at the beginning of the 19th century. His relationship with a married woman from the local nobility is the opportunity to go to Paris to satisfy his ambitions. Soon left to his own devices in this hectic and cruel city, he will discover that Parisian literary, intellectual and artistic life is only the facade of a vast cynical economic system, where "everything is bought and sold, literature like the press, politics like feelings, reputations like souls.
